Five Questions to Ask Before Choosing Birch Plywood
Five questions to bring to a material conversation.

A sheet may be called "plywood," but that alone tells us little about a specific job. It helps to start with what you are making, how the panel will look in the finished piece, and what will happen to it during fabrication. These five questions can begin the material discussion.
1. What will the panel be used for?
A furniture component, interior lining, and a blank for a fabricated product raise different questions. Describe the final use and the panel's role in the construction. Then the material discussion can begin with the job and its requirements.
2. Where and under what conditions will it be used?
Say whether the panel will be indoors and whether it may come into contact with moisture. Conditions of use help identify which specification and documents need checking. Do not assume that the properties of one panel apply to an entire plywood family.
3. Which faces and edges will be visible?
For an exposed surface, consider the appearance of the face and reverse, acceptable natural features of the wood, and the planned finish. If an edge will remain visible, mention that as well. These details affect the surface selection and how the panel is worked.
4. What dimensions and fabrication steps are needed?
Give the required thickness, sheet dimensions or cutting plan, and any planned operations: cutting, drilling, routing, laminating, or painting. This helps us check a suitable format without assuming that a specific size or option is available before it is confirmed.
5. What documents does the project require?
If the project has material requirements, describe them together with the use and working conditions. Ask for documents covering the specific product under consideration, then check that they state the required characteristics and scope. A general catalogue is useful for orientation, but it does not replace the specification for the selected panel.
